Care for the stone
that built the city.

Aberdeen is built of granite, and granite homes need the right care to stay sound. When the mortar between the stones breaks down, water gets in, and once water gets into a wall it brings damp, frost damage and decay with it. Repointing with the correct mortar, repairing damaged stone and keeping render sound are the jobs that quietly protect a property for the next generation. For over 20 years, owners of granite and rendered homes across Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire have trusted Granite Builders to look after their stonework properly.

We repoint, repair stone, render and harl, and put right the external masonry that keeps weather out of your home. The key is using materials that suit the wall, because hard modern cement mortar on a soft old granite wall traps moisture and does more harm than good. It is the same respect for older buildings we bring to every renovation and every job through our general building team. As Federation of Master Builders members and a TrustMark registered business, we have been independently vetted, so the standard you are promised is the standard you get.

What We Take On

Repoint, repair,
render, protect.

Why materials matter. Older granite and stone walls were built to breathe, using soft lime-based mortars that let moisture move out of the wall. Repointing them with hard modern cement seals moisture in, which pushes damp inside and can accelerate frost damage to the stone. We assess the wall first, then rake out failed joints to a proper depth and repoint with a mortar suited to the building, so the wall stays dry and sound. Where stone is damaged we repair or replace it to match, and where render is the right finish we make it good so it keeps weather out. The aim is always to protect the building for the long term, not to patch it for a season.

Why Granite Builders

The right method for old walls.

01

The Correct Mortar

We match the mortar to the wall, using breathable lime-based mixes on older stone rather than hard cement that traps moisture and damages the stone over time.

02

We Assess First

Before any work, we look at why the mortar or render is failing, because damp, movement or the wrong past repair all need a different answer. We treat the cause, not just the symptom.

03

Sympathetic to the Building

Granite and period homes deserve repairs that match and last. We repair stone and finishes so the work sits right with the age and character of the property.

04

Accredited, Not Just Insured

Federation of Master Builders membership and TrustMark registration mean we have been independently vetted against a Government-endorsed standard. These are not labels we gave ourselves.

Honest Pricing

How much does repointing
cost in Aberdeen?

The cost of masonry work depends on the size of the wall, its condition and access to it. Rather than quote a number that turns out to be meaningless, we price each job properly after a survey. The points below explain what drives the cost.

Wall Area
Tailored
Priced per project
A small elevation costs far less than repointing a whole house. We price to the area that needs work.
Condition
Tailored
Priced per project
Lightly weathered joints take less work than badly decayed mortar or damaged stone, confirmed at survey.
Access
Tailored
Priced per project
Upper walls and gables need scaffold or access equipment, which we include in the quote.
Materials
Tailored
Priced per project
The correct lime or specialist mortar and any replacement stone are costed to suit your building.

What is included. Our quotes cover access and scaffold where needed, raking out and repointing, stone repair or replacement, render repair, and clearing down on completion. We tell you upfront what sits outside the contract, so the final invoice holds no surprises. All figures are indicative only, subject to a site survey, and exclude VAT. We provide a detailed written quotation free of charge once we have seen the wall.

How Long Will It Take

From rake-out
to weathertight wall.

Masonry work depends on the size of the wall and the weather, since lime work needs the right conditions to cure. Here is an honest, typical shape for a single elevation once work begins. We confirm a programme for your specific job at quote stage.

Access
1 to 2 days
On site
Scaffold or access equipment set up safely where needed.
Rake Out
2 to 5 days
On site
Failed mortar raked out to a proper depth, wall prepared.
Repoint / Render
3 to 7 days
On site
Repointed or rendered with the correct mix, stone repaired.
Cure & Finish
varies
Weather led
Lime work protected and left to cure, then cleaned down.

As a guide, a single elevation typically takes around 1 to 3 weeks on site, depending on its size, condition and access, with lime work needing suitable weather to cure. All timescales are indicative only, subject to a site survey, and exclude VAT. We plan the work around the conditions the materials need.

About Us

A family builder Aberdeen has trusted for over 20 years.

Granite Builders has been part of Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire for over two decades. We are a family-run business, which means our reputation is personal. It is built one project at a time, and we intend to keep it that way.

Working on granite and older stone homes is not the same as building new, and the wrong repair can do lasting harm. Two decades in the North East have taught us how these walls were built and how to keep them sound, with the right materials and an honest assessment first. We are proud Federation of Master Builders members and TrustMark registered, because those standards matter to the people who trust us with their homes.

Good to Know

Repointing and masonry questions, answered.

Because granite and stone walls were built to breathe. Soft lime-based mortars let moisture move out of the wall, while hard modern cement seals it in. Point an old wall with cement and moisture gets trapped, which pushes damp inside and can crack and spall the stone as it freezes. We assess the wall and use a mortar suited to it, so the wall stays dry and the stone is protected.

Common signs are mortar that is crumbling, missing or sitting proud, damp patches appearing inside, or stone that is starting to flake and erode. If you can rake out the joints easily with a finger or a key, the mortar has failed. We are happy to survey the walls and give you an honest assessment of what, if anything, needs doing and how urgently.

Yes. Where stone has cracked, spalled or eroded, we repair it or replace individual stones to match the wall, so it stays sound and looks right. We treat the cause too, since decayed stone often follows failed pointing or a damp problem that needs fixing at the same time to stop it recurring.

It depends on the size of the wall, its condition and the access needed, so we do not quote a figure until we have seen it. After a free survey you receive a detailed written quote. All pricing is indicative only, subject to a site survey, and excludes VAT.

Straightforward repointing and repair usually do not need permission, but listed buildings and properties in conservation areas can have restrictions on materials and finishes, and Aberdeen has both. We check whether any consent applies before starting and advise you, so the work is done correctly and within the rules.

Yes. We apply and repair render and harl finishes where they are the right choice for the wall, using materials that suit the building beneath. Whether it is patching a failed area or refinishing an elevation, we make the render sound and weathertight so it protects the wall rather than trapping moisture in it.
