Outdoor space that lasts
as long as the house.

A good patio or path is built the same way as a good building, from the ground up. Most outdoor paving fails not because of the slabs on top, but because of what was, or was not, put underneath. Skimp on the sub-base and you get sinking, cracking and puddles within a couple of winters. For over 20 years, homeowners across Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire have trusted Granite Builders to lay patios, paths and paving that are dug out and built up properly, so they stay level and drain cleanly for years.

We take on patios, paths, paving, steps and the hard landscaping that ties a garden together, often alongside an extension or a garden room so the whole outdoor space works as one. Because we are builders first, the groundwork, drainage and levels are done to the same standard as everything else we do. As Federation of Master Builders members and a TrustMark registered business, we have been independently vetted, so the standard you are promised is the standard you get.

What We Build Outside

Groundwork done right,
finishes that last.

What proper groundwork means. Every patio, path or driveway we lay starts below the surface. We excavate to the right depth, lay and compact a sub-base sized to the use, and set the levels so surface water always runs away from the house, not towards it. Only then do we lay the slabs, blocks or paving, bedded and jointed correctly, with edge restraints where they are needed to stop spreading. Drainage is planned in from the start. The result is an outdoor surface that stays flat, firm and clean for years, rather than one that lifts and puddles after the first hard winter.

Why Granite Builders

Built from the ground up.

01

The Base Comes First

We dig out and compact a proper sub-base before anything is laid. It is the part you never see and the reason our paving stays level while cheaper jobs sink.

02

Set to Drain

We form falls so rainwater runs away from your home and off the surface. No standing puddles, no water pushed back towards the house.

03

Builders, Not Just Layers

Because we are a building firm, the groundwork, levels and drainage are done to building standard, and we can tie the work into an extension or garden room seamlessly.

04

Accredited, Not Just Insured

Federation of Master Builders membership and TrustMark registration mean we have been independently vetted against a Government-endorsed standard. These are not labels we gave ourselves.

Honest Pricing

How much does a patio
or driveway cost?

The cost of outdoor work depends on the area, the surface you choose and how much groundwork the site needs. Rather than quote a number that turns out to be meaningless, we price each job properly after a survey. The points below explain what drives the cost.

Area
Tailored
Priced per project
A small patio costs far less than a full driveway. We price to the square metres you actually need.
Surface
Tailored
Priced per project
Slabs, block paving, porcelain and gravel vary in price. You choose the surface and we cost it honestly.
Groundwork
Tailored
Priced per project
Excavation, sub-base and any levelling of a sloping site are confirmed at survey and priced in.
Drainage
Tailored
Priced per project
Where extra drainage or a soakaway is needed, we include it so the surface stays dry and compliant.

What is included. Our quotes cover excavation, sub-base, edge restraints, the surface laid and jointed, drainage and falls, and clearing the site on completion. We tell you upfront what sits outside the contract, so the final invoice holds no surprises. All figures are indicative only, subject to a site survey, and exclude VAT. We provide a detailed written quotation free of charge once we have seen the space.

How Long Will It Take

From dig-out
to finished surface.

Outdoor work is weather-dependent, but the stages are straightforward. Here is an honest, typical shape for a patio or path once work begins. We confirm a programme for your specific job at quote stage.

Excavation
1 to 2 days
On site
Area dug out to depth and the ground prepared.
Sub-Base
1 to 2 days
On site
Sub-base laid, compacted and levelled to falls.
Laying
2 to 5 days
On site
Slabs or paving laid, cut in and edged neatly.
Finishing
1 to 2 days
On site
Jointed, cleaned down and the site cleared.

As a guide, a typical patio or path takes around 1 to 2 weeks on site, and a full driveway a little longer, depending on the area and groundwork involved. Weather can affect outdoor work, and we keep you informed. All timescales are indicative only, subject to a site survey, and exclude VAT.

About Us

A family builder Aberdeen has trusted for over 20 years.

Granite Builders has been part of Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire for over two decades. We are a family-run business, which means our reputation is personal. It is built one project at a time, and we intend to keep it that way.

Outdoor work is where corners get cut most often, because so much of the important part is buried out of sight. We do not cut those corners. The groundwork, levels and drainage under our paving are done to the same standard as our building work, which is exactly why it lasts. We are proud Federation of Master Builders members and TrustMark registered, because those standards matter to the people who trust us with their homes.

Good to Know

Landscaping questions, answered.

Almost always because of poor groundwork. If the sub-base is too thin or badly compacted, the surface above has nothing solid to sit on, so it settles unevenly, cracks and holds water. We dig out to the right depth and lay a proper compacted sub-base before anything goes on top, which is why our paving stays level. It is the part you cannot see that decides how long the part you can see will last.

A patio at ground level usually does not need planning permission, but there are rules in Scotland about paving over front gardens with materials that do not drain, because of surface water run-off. We make sure the surface and drainage meet the requirements, and we advise you if anything about your project needs a check with the council before we start.

It depends on the area, the surface you choose and how much excavation and groundwork the site needs, so we do not quote a figure until we have seen it. After a free survey you receive a detailed written quote. All pricing is indicative only, subject to a site survey, and excludes VAT.

Yes. Sloping sites often need levelling, retaining or steps to make them usable, which is straightforward groundwork for a building firm. We survey the levels, plan the falls and drainage, and build in whatever the ground needs so the finished surface is safe, level and lasting.

Absolutely, and it makes sense to. When the patio, paths and levels are planned alongside an extension or garden room, the whole outdoor space works together and there is one team accountable for all of it. We are happy to quote landscaping on its own or as part of a larger project.

Yes. We form falls so surface water always runs away from the house and off the paving, and where a site needs extra drainage or a soakaway we build it in. Proper drainage is planned from the start, not added later, so you do not get puddles or water pushed back towards the building.
