Most homeowners picture the finished loft long before they picture the way up to it. Yet the stair is the one element that touches two storeys at once. It has to satisfy building standards for safety, it has to fit the space you already have at the top of the house, and it has to take a slice out of a room on the floor below without ruining it. Get the staircase wrong and you lose a usable bedroom downstairs, or you end up with headroom so tight that the loft never feels like a proper room.

At the bottom it needs to land somewhere on the existing floor that you can spare, ideally over or near the existing staircase so the two align and the circulation feels natural.

In a great many Aberdeen homes the cleanest answer is to place the new flight directly above the existing stair, rising in the same direction.   • Headroom is the clear height measured vertically above the line of the stair, so that a person of normal height can climb it without ducking.

Scottish building standards set out acceptable limits for each of these, along with the relationship between rise and going that keeps a flight comfortable rather than steep or shallow. Staircase layouts that work in a loft

Once the position is fixed, the layout follows from how much length and width you have to play with. These are the configurations we use most often in loft conversions, from the simplest to the most space efficient.

Straight flight

A single run with no turns. It is the safest to use, the easiest to build, the cheapest, and the kindest to anyone carrying furniture up to a new bedroom. The drawback is that a straight flight needs the most uninterrupted length on the floor below, which a smaller home may not have. Where the run does fit, it is almost always the right choice.

L-shaped, with a quarter turn

The flight turns ninety degrees, usually with a small landing at the turn. This tucks the staircase into a corner and shortens the floor length it needs, which helps when a straight run would poke into the middle of a room. The landing also gives a natural pause and a safe place to stop. It is a popular compromise in semi-detached Aberdeen homes.

U-shaped, with a half turn

Two parallel flights joined by a half landing, doubling back on themselves. This is the most compact way to climb a full storey within a square footprint, so it suits homes where the stair has to sit within a tight, boxy space rather than a long thin one. It uses more structural work than a straight flight but contains the whole rise in a small plan area.

Winder stairs

Instead of a flat landing at the turn, the steps themselves fan around the corner as tapered treads. Winders save the most space of any conventional layout because no floor is given over to a landing, every step does some climbing. The trade-off is that tapered treads are narrower on the inside of the turn and need careful design to stay safe and comfortable, so they are used where space is genuinely tight rather than by default.

Space-saving options when the obvious route will not fit

Sometimes the house simply does not have room for a comfortable conventional stair without sacrificing too much below. There are narrower options, but each comes with a condition attached, and it is worth being clear-eyed about them.

  • Space-saver, or alternating tread, stairs have treads cut away on alternating sides so each footstep uses half a step. They take up very little length but are steep and can only be used in limited circumstances, typically serving a single room that is not the main accommodation. They are not a shortcut around the rules for a proper bedroom stair.
  • Borrowing from a box room below the loft is often a better answer than squeezing the stair itself. Giving up a small box room to a generous, compliant staircase usually trades better than keeping the box room and living with a cramped, steep climb.
  • Rooflights over the stairwell do not save floor space, but a roof window above the head of the stair floods the landing with daylight and makes a necessarily compact route feel open rather than boxed in.

A spiral stair is occasionally raised as a space saver. It can look striking, but it is awkward for moving furniture and beds, and for a principal bedroom it is rarely the practical choice. We will tell you honestly when an idea looks good on paper but will frustrate you in daily use.

How the stair affects the room below

This is the part that catches people out. The loft gains a room, but the floor below loses some area to the new stairwell and the landing that serves it. The skill is making that loss invisible. Where the new flight sits over the existing stair, the cost is usually just the ceiling void and a reworked landing, and nothing habitable is lost. Where it has to come off a bedroom, the question becomes whether that room still works afterwards, a double that becomes a single, or a single that becomes a study, is a real consequence to weigh before committing.

A dormer can help here in a roundabout way. By adding head height across part of the loft, a dormer gives the stair more landing options at the top, which in turn frees up where it can land at the bottom. The two decisions are linked, which is why the staircase should be designed alongside the conversion type rather than bolted on at the end. Whether your loft can take a comfortable stair at all comes back to head height and roof shape, the same things that decide whether your loft is suitable for conversion in the first place.
