Glazing and doors
Glazing is where a lot of the character of a garden room comes from, and also where a lot of heat can be lost if it is poorly chosen. Large sliding or bi-fold doors and full height windows look superb and bring the garden in, but glass is always a weaker insulator than an insulated wall, so the specification of the glazing matters.
For year round use, good quality double glazing in a thermally broken frame is the sensible baseline, and triple glazing is worth considering where a wall faces the prevailing wind or where you want the room to feel warm right up to the glass. A low emissivity coating and an inert gas fill between the panes both help the units hold heat. Just as important is how the frames are installed and sealed into the structure, because a beautiful window fitted with gaps around it will still leak heat and let draughts in.

Glazing brings light and the view that makes a garden room special, but a wall that is almost entirely glass will always be harder to keep warm than one with a sensible amount of insulated wall around the openings. Heating options that make sense
Once the fabric is right, the room needs very little heat to stay comfortable, and that changes which heating option makes sense. The goal is steady, controllable warmth that is cheap to run in a well insulated space, rather than a powerful heater fighting a leaky one. The main choices are:
- Electric panel or infrared heaters. Simple, low cost to fit and ideal for a well insulated room used in sessions. Infrared in particular warms surfaces and people quickly, which suits a room you switch on when you go out to it.
